NASCAR Season Disappointments

With thirteen races now completed, it is clear which drivers were the pleasant surprises of the 2009 Sprint Cup season. Making NASCAR news is a small group of hot drivers. Stewart-Haas Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman have exceeded preseason expectations. Michael Waltrip Racing driver David Reutimann is having a defining season, as he recently rode to victory at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. He is within striking distance of the top twelve.

Brad Keselowski, a part-time Spring Cup driver, became a winner for the first time in 2009. As a driver for Phoenix Racing, the independent team owned by James Finch, Keselowski gained an outstanding victory at Talladega.

There were other pleasant surprises, including the improvement of Juan Pablo Montoya and Sam Hornish Jr over their 2008 season records.

Now, there have also been disappointments on the circuit, both with drivers and teams that have had less than stellar records.

Dale Earnhardt Jr tops the roster of disappointments in 2009. Back in 2008, when Earnhardt Jr became a member of Hendrick Motorsports, he was touted as the best of the four-car team. Unfortunately, as the season got underway, competing teams gained in ranking, and Earnhardt Jr started to fall behind. He has yet to recapture the magic he and Tony Eury Jr found in the early months of the 2008 campaign. In fact, Rick Hendrick replaced Tony Eury Jr with Lance McGrew. McGrew is serving as the interim crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Despite his efforts, Earnhardt Jr has struggled to carry his burden; in the midst of his struggles, this burden seems like too much to bear. NASCAR’s fan favorite driver must improve quickly in order to cut down all of the negative press.

Kevin Harvick, who was a qualifying driver in the Chase for the Championship between 2006 and 2008, also won six competitions during that time. Nevertheless, he finds himself in the middle of his least productive season since his sophomore slump in 2002. It looks like a fourth Chase for the Championship just isn’t in the cards for Harvick, who hasn’t had a victory on the track since the 2007 Daytona 500.

Harvick is not the only driver from his stable that is failing to hold up to earlier expectations. His Richard Childress Racing teammates have faded since the previous year, most notably Clint Bowyer. Despite a great start to the 2009 season, Bowyer has not managed to crack the top ten in the seven races leading up to the Pocono 500. Jeff Burton has kept up his consistency, but it is clear that the team’s performance as a whole is lower . Driver Casey Mears has managed to get two top ten finishes in the last four races despite his slow start at open of the season.

Roush Fenway Racing driver David Ragan ranks high as another disappointing performer, rivaling even Earnhardt Jr and Harvick. This marks another series of blemishes reported by NASCAR news sources. Ragan was possibly the most improved driver in 2008, but he has fallen back into mediocrity. With a thirteenth place finish at 2008 championships, NASCAR news and racing analysts were forecasting that Ragan would join the ranks of drivers competing in the Sprint Cup championships. Unfortunately, for Ragan, he only scored one top ten finish in the first thirteen races. There must be some issue with the team.

Ragan’s teammate Carl Edwards won a Sprint Cup series-high nine races in 2008. After thirteen consecutive losses, Edwards has not been able to do his signature celebratory back flip. Still, with Edwards ranked in the top twelve in the championship standings, his performance has been a bit of let down, as it has been for other members of the No. 99 group.
