NASCAR: A Win Is A Win

It is common for the casual NASCAR fan to believe that the way to victory is to have the quickest vehicle. In many cases that is correct. All drivers and teams toil for countless hours throughout the week hoping to formulate the magic setup in order to have fastest car possible when they arrive at the track the following weekend. As has been highlighted again and again by NASCAR news affiliates, there are no guarantees. Not everyone can be the fastest, which is why teams analyze a multitude of strategies in order to find ways to win.

David Reutimann won the 2009 Coca Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway after his crew chief Rodney Childers made the decision to keep his driver on the track while the leaders pitted. The race was more than half over, and precipitation was falling on the raceway. The question was whether the race would continue or be canceled with the rainfall on the track. As such, Reutimann, and drivers Robby Gordon and Ryan Newman, decided to take their chances with the weather.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. eastern standard time, the NASCAR management halted the race, and gave Reutimann his first ever win at the Sprint Cup. Wins due to rain-shortened events have always been received with a bit of wink and a nod by drivers and officials alike. Fans typically bemoan a win like that, perhaps referring to it as a lucky break. The opinions of some fans often find an audience on NASCAR news channels. This must be balanced with the fact that NASCAR is probably the most competitive form of auto racing in the country. A win is a win, and every driver on the track would be happy to perform the ‘rain dance’ if it meant that they were going to make the coveted trip to victory lane. It has become a privileged position in NASCAR news correspondents to witness the displays of amazing and winning strategies by racing teams.

A reasonable plan contributed to Reutimann’s victory that day. His crew chief followed the weather report, and felt as if it was in his driver’s best interest to stay out. Had the rain ceased, and the other cars headed back out to the track, then they would have had to make a pit stop, but Reutimann and Childers knew they would have needed to make essential adjustments to improve vehicle performance. Adjustments such as these can be rather time consuming. Additionally, Reutimann would have lost his track position if they had pit stopped with the others, so he chose to wait on the rain. Their strategy was the winning strategy.

Kyle Busch led 173 of the 207 laps paced, while race-winner Reutimann led only five laps and was in the fourteenth position when the skies opened up.

NASCAR news reported similar events involving Jeff Gordon. Back in 2007, Gordon made use of the ‘rain dance’ strategy to win at Pocono. Although his car was no longer in shape to compete, his team believed that rain was coming, and it paid off big. In fact, if the rain would have come a mere five seconds later than it did, Gordon would have completed in second. Fellow driver Ryan Newman was passing around Gordon’s vehicle when the caution flag was displayed.

It may be that the stars themselves should align to achieve a victory on the track. Factors like tire strategy and fuel mileage offer the type of strategies that can get a driver to victory without having the fastest thing on the track.

Back in 2003, Newman and the Penske Racing team were known for using a smaller carburetor to stretch their fuel. At least four of his eight total wins during the 2003 season were because of fuel mileage.

In the past, some drivers have taken a two-tire pit stop in order to obtain track position late in the race, so they could go for the win. Often, it has allowed the driver to make it.

In NASCAR, a win is a win, no matter the specifics. However the trophy reaches hi hands, a driver will be happy to accept it.
